Roundtable Series

The Business Value of Knowledge Organization Systems

This Roundtable series, held Spring 2022, addressed how we establish the business value for KOS and how we build the necessary capabilities to deliver this business value. The sessions featured a team of distinguished panelists who brought insights from their experience, and provided opportunities for participants to share their own experiences.

Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) such as taxonomies, ontologies, knowledge graphs, and metadata schemas are critical pieces of infrastructure that help organizations achieve their business goals.

Bob Kasenchak, Patrick Lambe, Michele Ann Jenkins and Stephanie Lemieux joined Ahren Lehnert to discuss organizational knowledge organization capabilities, what it takes to build and sustain them.

These free events were developed in partnership with Dovecot Studio, Factor, Straits Knowledge and Synaptica.

Session 1: Why do we need Knowledge Organization Capabilities?
Session 2: How do we Build Capabilities in Knowledge Organization Systems?
Session 3: What does it take to Sustain and Reap Value from our Capabilities in Knowledge Organization Systems?

This three part series fostered participant engagement and input. Participants engaged through surveys, breakout room discussions, and question-and-answer chat.

To preserve privacy and encourage openness, these events were not recorded. Materials and resources are available to download below.

Knowledge Organization Capabilities Survey 2022

As part of the Roundtable series, individuals can take part in this survey developed by Matt Moore and Patrick Lambe. This simple self-assessment tool for practitioners working with Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) to identify the areas of strength in their organization and opportunities for improvement to help build the business value of KOS.

This survey was developed for the Innovations in Knowledge Organization Conference 2015, and updated in 2022.

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete. Initial findings from the Survey were discussed as part of the Roundtable series.
